Festival of Social Science 2020 Case Study

The Economic and Social Research Council's (ESRC) annual event Festival of Social Science began in 2002. Every year, through a collaboration of ESRC's partner academic institutions a week long of learning has taken place in a physical format. As everything changed in 2020, so did the festival, becoming virtual for the first time.

This brand new website is dedicated specifically to the festival in its online format. A significant amount of this project was put into the planning itself, making sure that a well structured calendar and booking system was in place for the 180 events taking place. Regular contact was kept with ESRC colleagues to ensure each milestone was completed in order to meet the very tight timescale.

A colour scheme, graphics and icons were developed to work in-line with ESRC's own branding but still giving the festival its own identity. The design is fully responsive and meets the UK accessibility regulations.

The event details are presented in a daily diary format and themes as well as linked with the relevant partner organisation, of which there are 18 universities. There is a filtering and search system in place too, to ensure events can be found in multiple ways. Each event and each university also have their own individual page of details. Some events were recorded during their live presentation and are being added to the website as videos, which will be available to view online indefinitely.

Training and written guidance on how to use the website was provided to all partner organisations and an ongoing support service is also in place. The website is hosted of course at our very own Green Hosting.
