Self Help UK Case Study

Self Help UK is the leading specialist organisation in promoting, supporting and encouraging Self Help Groups, both locally in Nottinghamshire and nationwide. The remit of the organisation is broad, including working directly with groups, professionals and within communities. They recruit volunteers and facilitate referrals to services, supply training courses and maintain a huge directory of groups and contacts.

The brief for this website focussed mainly on modernising the content management system to enable administrators to publish content more easily as well as manage back-end systems such as a reporting facility, contacts database and members' area. New branding had recently been developed for physical materials and so this was to be used in the new website too along with a responsive design for mobile, tablet and desktop screens.

As is a huge website incorporating many sections such as a searchable directory, a referrals system, events calendar, news, projects, volunteering, recruitment, research and more, it was vital for the structure and navigation to be much clearer than before. Self Help UK administrators are easily able to create and edit pages with images, downloads and videos. They can also manage page layouts which is especially useful on the homepage, allowing special features to be prominent as and when needed.

Website visitors can search a large directory of self help groups either by keyword, topics or A-Z. They can add groups to a list of their choice in order to collect only the those they are interested in and view them again later. There is extensive information on how to set up a group, the support available to groups and training available. For those wishing to access a group or service, there is advice on how to do this as well as a referral system.

The public-facing website is just one area of the work involved. The administration area of also includes a sophisticated reporting system where admins can filter and show stats on particular areas of their work. There is also an area accessible to members only and a facility for staff to keep additional information about groups and services.

This is a large and complex website made simple to use by effective structuring of information and clear design.

Full training was provided to Self Help UK colleagues, including a written website guide and ongoing support.
