Army Ornithological Society Case Study

The Army Ornithological Society is comprised of serving soldiers, MOD civilians and retired Service members who all have a common interest in bird life. Their work contributes to the conservation of birds in the UK and overseas and involves bird counts, surveys and expeditions.

The previous AOS website had been built in-house and grown organically over the years. Website admins were finding it awkward to update and felt that it didn't serve its audience as it should, both in terms of its features and its design.

Our brief was to create a whole new site, retaining much of its existing content but adding a new structure and navigation and a clearer way of presenting the varied information available to visitors. We provided consultation on content organisation and created a design to meet its needs. The visual style needed to be clean and professional, incorporating military and nature themes. We created an appropriate, subtle colour scheme, also taking into account AOS's position next to the other Service Societies.

The key objectives for the new website were to clearly outline and record the work of the Society, attract new members, encourage more people to get involved in their work and activities and provide useful resources for a range of birders. The site features include a blog to keep visitors up to date with the latest news, an events calendar, a photo gallery and a useful resources section. There is also a special, custom section highlighting AOS's work on Ascension Island and an existing discussion forum which was incorporated into the new site.

This website is responsive so that it provides optimum usability for various screen sizes of devices, from desktop computers to mobile phones - particularly useful for busy service folk on the move! It uses HTML5 and CSS 3.

AOS update their new website via a content management system, which allows editors based in various different geographical locations to easily contribute to the site via a web based log-in and interface. We provided training and written guides on using the system as well as advice on best practice in writing for the web.

The AOS website is 100% wind powered by our very own Green Hosting.
